Marshall Tyler’s third OSCAR® qualifying short film SLOW PULSE shares the moving story of a single father learning to heal through dance

Director Marshall Tyler’s SLOW PULSE starring Jimmie Fails (Last Black Man of San Francisco) is a beautiful story of a man learning to dance for the most heartbreaking reason which turns into hope. This moving short is the third film by Tyler to be considered for the Oscars® SLOW PULSE has qualified to be considered for the 95th Academy Awards® after winning the award at The Pan African Film & Arts Festival. This mind blowing short premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and has recently completed its festival run winning awards and airing domestically on CBS.

In this moving story of love and dedication, Bernard Brash heals and finds hope by learning how to dance.

One of the interesting aspects of the project is its 8 minute and 46 seconds running time, a way of reclaiming the time commemorating George Floyd and the protests that followed his murder in the summer of 2020.

This beautiful short film was written and directed by Marshall Tyler who is an alumni of the ABC Disney Television Directing Program, and an alumnus of the Ryan Murphy Half-Initiative. His first short, NIGHT SHIFT (Executive produced by Viola Davis), premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and won the Grand Jury Award at the 2017 Chicago International Film Festival. CAP, a beautiful black and white documentary-hybrid was awarded Best Narrative Short at the ABFF HBO Short Film Competition and was subsequently licensed by HBO. With the support of 150 WarnerDiscovery (“Drive My Car”), he is currently shooting a documentary about iconic designer Willi Smith of WilliWear, who was a trailblazing talent gone too soon and whose influence on international fashion continues today.

SLOW PULSE is produced by Moira Griffin, a former exec with Fox Entertainment and Sundance Institute, who is a producer and strategist based in Los Angeles for New Bumper and Paint Filmworks in partnership with writer/director Marshall Tyler. Their newly launched production company works to develop diverse auteur creators across all platforms while championing thought-provoking stories showcasing the frailty and humanity of all people. Producing alongside Moira are: Efuru Flowers the founder of Flourishing Films, a Los Angeles-based production company and international film distribution and sales agency focused on developing and advancing media that can effect change; and Jeremy Hartman co-founder of the creative house Way Out West, focusing on physical production, Jeremy has led projects for global companies such as Adidas (with Playboi Carti, 21 Savage, and Young Thug), Under Armour (Tom Brady), Converse, Samsung, Cadillac (Regina King), and many more.

The phenomenal cinematography was created by acclaimed DP Eric Branco (“40 Year old Version”, “Clemency”). The melodious composition was brought to life by Emmy Award winning composer Timo Chen (“Advantageous”. Reuniting them with frequent collaborator Marshall Tyler for yet another film that explores a side of Los Angeles rarely seen onscreen.

This heartbreaking yet uplifting short has qualified to be considered for an OSCAR®.
