The Film Library of Greece, the Film Library of Thessaloniki and the Thessaloniki Film Festival, with the support of the Hellenic Film Center, are honoring Pantelis Voulgaris with a retrospective of his fiction films, which will be presented in Athens from December 8 to 15, in the large hall of Film Library of Greece.
A unique opportunity to see 12 of his beloved feature films on the big screen: from ANNA’S ENGAGEMENT to his most recent creation, THE LAST NOTE, with the presence of actors from each film. Four short films by the great Greek creator will also be screened.
The Pantelis Voulgaris retrospective, presented with great success a few days ago in Thessaloniki, explores the complex and fascinating aspects of the work of one of the leading directors of Greek cinema.
As Maria Komninou, president of the Film Library of Greece, points out, “Voulgaris was one of the main exponents of the new current of Greek Cinema (NEK), and he decisively contributed to the renewal of his writing and perspective. Already from his first film, Anna’s Consul (1972), he shapes his personal writing and wins 3 prizes at the Berlin Film Festival, while he is in exile from the junta.”
“Voulgaris, forms a long path with beloved and important films – narratives that focus on the transition of society from the politics of exclusions and discrimination (Happy day, Stone Years) to the politics of identities (Everything is a road, Brides). Let’s remember that in Brides, Norman, the photographer, is perhaps even closer to the director himself, who insists on photographing-filming the small things that others pass by. This is the look of Voulgaris: he insists on portraying the humble, the insignificant people that others pass by…”
The opening of the tribute will take place on Thursday, December 8, with the film ANNA’S ENGAGEMENT (To proxenio tis Annas) in the presence of Pantelis Voulgaris and the film’s protagonist Anna Vagena. The iconic Greek director will be present at the screenings of the tribute to welcome his favorite collaborators in front of and behind the camera who will preface the films. And of course, the writer Ioanna Karystianis, his partner in life as well as in art, could not be missing, since she has signed the script of many of his films.
*Three films in the program will be screened with special subtitles for K/deaf and hard of hearing and visually impaired people, and with audio description for blind and visually impaired people (Universally accessible SDH / AD screening).
