PARK CITY, UTAH (December 28, 2022) – DON’T MATTER MEDIA has announced the world premiere of its short film MILLSTONE starring Daniel Durant (CODA, Dancing With the Stars) at the 2023 Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. MILLSTONE will be playing as part of Slamdance’s Unstoppable Program and will premiere on January 25, 2023.

Durant stars in this dark, emotionally fraught thriller about a grieving husband and wife who seek out the one therapist they think can help them – only to find that his methods might be worse than anything they could have imagined.

The film, featuring an all-Deaf cast, is entirely in American Sign Language with English subtitles. Writer/Director Peter Hoffman Kimball (of the upcoming all-ASL feature dark comedy I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead) – who is the hearing father of a deaf child – has been called one of the leading filmmakers in the new wave of Sign Language Cinema.

“It’s important to me that films in sign language feature deaf actors without always centering a hearing character and without always being primarily about deafness. The characters may be deaf and the film may be in ASL, but the story can still be about anything under the sun,” says Kimball.

Durant has said, “Millstone was a lot of fun because it was a totally different character for me to dive into… It is always a great experience telling a new story where our being Deaf is not a focus.”

After premiering at Slamdance in January, Millstone is expected to spend the rest of 2023 on the film festival circuit before being widely distributed. Contact DON’T MATTER MEDIA for press inquiries.

The 2023 Slamdance Film Festival will take place in Park City and Salt Lake City, UT from January 20th – 26th, 2023 and virtually via the Slamdance Channel January 23rd – January 29th.

ABOUT SLAMDANCE

By filmmakers, for filmmakers. Established in 1995 by a wild bunch of filmmakers who were tired of relying on a large, oblique system to showcase their work, Slamdance has proven, year after year, that when it comes to recognizing talent and launching careers, independent and grassroots communities can do it themselves.

In addition to the Festival, Slamdance serves emerging artists and a growing community with several year-round initiatives. These include the Slamdance Screenplay Competition, its educational program Slamdance Polytechnic, DIG showcase of Digital Interactive and Gaming art, distribution efforts through Slamdance Presents, an outdoor screening series Slamdance Joshua Tree, and the artist-led festival at Slamdance Miami.
