Kiosa Sukami’s A LETTER TO BLACK MEN is a phenomenal short film that highlights the life of gang-related crimes in the UK, and how it has been glamorized by films and rappers. We watch first-hand the negative effect the life of crime has on family, brotherhood and religion. This impeccable short has qualified to be considered for the BAFTA’s 2023 and has been nominated for Best UK Short at Raindance Film Festival.
Kevin succumbs to a life of crime after the loss of his father. On the day of Kevin’s gang initiation, Black is released from prison. He attempts to rekindle the relationship with Kevin and his sister, turned legal guardian, Kelsie.
Writer, director and producer Kiosa Sukami is an award-winning British-Congolese Writer & Director. He is known for his cinematic realism approach to filmmaking and has had works screened at domestic & international festivals. Kiosa’s film LONGFIELD DRIVE was screened in competition at the London Short Film Festival, Plymouth Film Festival and the Festival du Cinéma Européen. In 2017 was hosted on one of the fastest-growing independent youth platforms for film in the UK, Million Youth Media. His short film YOLK screened in competition at BAFTA-accredited British Urban Film Festival and Bolton Film Festival. His next short film, A LETTER TO BLACK MEN, is already creating a buzz and has qualified to be considered for the BAFTA 2023.
Assistant director Laurelle Jones began her career as a writer in 2013 with the short No. 27 and she went on to produce numerous projects including LIA which was her debut in the role. Laurelle’s aim is to create films that educate, inspire and encourage change. ‘Let’s discuss those taboo subjects and offer alternative narratives’ she says. Her inspirations are Spike Lee, Ava Duvernay, Amma Asante, Lena Waithe, Issa Rae and Debbie Tucker Green to name a few. Her recent work included A LETTER TO BLACK MEN on which she is assistant director.
The incredible cinematography has been created by Miguel Carmenes he brings his edgy and visceral vision with him. Miguel is now represented by Independent Talent He has been working in many UK productions including commercials and music videos for artists such as KSI, Burna Boy, Jnr Choi and New Hope Club.
The film can be seen at Raindance Film Festival, British Urban Film Festival, Bolton Film Festival and has been longlisted for a BIFA.
