Montreal (November 29, 2022) – Sphère Films has announced the theatrical release of HOLY SPIDER by Iranian filmmaker Ali Abbasi. First presented and celebrated in Cannes where lead actress Zahra Amir Ebrahimi won the Best Actress Award and presented at TIFF in Special Presentations, HOLY SPIDER is Denmark’s official entry for Best International Film at this year’s Oscars.
Female journalist Rahimi travels to the Iranian holy city of Mashhad to investigate a serial killer targeting sex workers. As she draws closer to exposing his crimes, the opportunity for justice grows harder to attain when the murderer is embraced by many as a hero. Based on the true story of the ‘Spider Killer’ Saeed Hanaei, who saw himself as on a mission from God as he killed 16 women between 2000 and 2001.
HOLY SPIDER portrays the rise and fall of one of Iran’s most infamous serial killers: Saeed Hanaei, and questions, through this portrait, contemporary Iranian society and the misogyny deeply ingrained in it. The film is set in the city of Mashad, the second-most-populous city in Iran and the second-largest holy city in the world.
Ali Abbasi is known for his first feature Border, winner of the Un Certain Regard Award at the Cannes festival in 2018. It was also selected by Sweden to represent the country at the Academy Awards. Holy Spider is his third feature film.
Distributed in Canada by Sphère Films, HOLY SPIDER will be released in theaters in Vancouver on December 9th, 2022.
