51st Festival du Nouveau Cinéma: The Short Film Selection Unveiled

Montreal, September 13, 2022 – The Festival du nouveau cinéma (FNC) is pleased to unveil the short films on the lineup for its 51st edition. From October 5 to 16, festivalgoers will have a chance to discover over 100 short films from close to 30 countries at the Cinémathèque québécoise, Cinéma Moderne and Agora in UQÀM’s Cœur des Sciences. Audiences are also invited to the many special events honouring our homegrown filmmakers.

A bold selection

For its 51st edition, the FNC highlights works by emerging talents and established directors from here and around the world that garnered attention in the past year on the international festival circuit. They include Salomé Villeneuve’s III, straight from its screening at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month, Emilie Mannering’s À LA VIE À L’AMOR and Matthew Rankin’s MUNICIPAL RELAXATION MODULE, both of which screened at TIFF, and AU CRÉPUSCULE by Miryam Charles, presented at the Locarno Festival. Audiences will also be treated to works by international filmmakers, including ON XERXES’ THRONE by Evi Kalogiropoulou, winner of best short film at Cannes Critics’ Week in May, and IL FAUT REGARDER LE FEU OU BRÛLER DEDANS, directed by Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel, the subjects of an FNC retrospective in 2019.

Cartes blanches

Two short films produced by the FNC and directed by local filmmakers will be presented alternately before the screening of some of the festival’s films: IMMUNE by Mike Hoolboom and VISITES NOCTURNES SILENCIEUSES by Ariane Louis-Seize. The project is made possible thanks to the support of Telefilm Canada and Post-Moderne.

Special events

Several special events will run alongside our programming this year. On October 8 at
5 pm at the Cinéma Moderne,
the FNC will present a full retrospective of Trevor Anderson’s short films to coincide with the Festival’s screening of his first feature, BEFORE I CHANGE MY MIND. Then on October 7 at 7 pm at the Agora in UQAM’s Cœur des Sciences, the FNC will present RANKIN IN BEAR COUNTRY, a brand-new series of shorts about the Canadian wilderness in which filmmaker Matthew Rankin skewers the government’s aesthetic conventions. A discussion hosted by Émilie Poirier, head of short film programming at the Festival, will also feature newly restored government-produced films from the 1970s and a musical performance.

The juries

Three juries will hand out the various awards this year.

The awards night for short films will take place on Wednesday, October 12 at 8 pm at the Agora in UQÀM’s Cœur des sciences. The evening will be hosted by Tatiana Zinga Botao.

The Rencontres pancanadiennes du cinéma étudiant is back

The Rencontres Pancanadiennes du Cinéma Étudiant (RPCÉ) will also be back this year. Presented by Netflix in partnership with INIS, the RPCÉ will screen 30 films in competition for its ninth edition. In keeping with tradition, an international school has been invited to screen its selection, and this year’s guest lineup will be courtesy of the Institut des Arts de Diffusion in Belgium. Alongside regular RPCÉ activities, Campus FNC will shine a spotlight on the École des arts numériques, de l’animation et du design (UQAC NAD) through a retrospective exhibition that showcases the eclecticism and excellence of its students’ work. The RPCÉ is competitive, and this year’s jury, in charge of awarding the Grand Prix presented by Netflix and the Prix Jeune Loup for college-level students presented by Sony/Royal Photo, will be made up of Michel Wouters, assistant director of the Institut des Arts de Diffusion, and Justine Baillargeon, head of distribution at H264 Distribution.

The 51st edition of the Festival du nouveau cinéma (FNC) will run from October 5 to 16, 2022 in Montreal. FALCON LAKE by Charlotte Le Bon will open this year’s edition on October 5 at the Cinéma Impérial, with the filmmakers in attendance. The full lineup will be unveiled on September 20.

The Festival du nouveau cinéma is presented by Québecor.
