Locarno Film Festival 2022 lineup

2022 Locarno Film Festival, or 75th Festival international du film de Locarno, has announced the complete lineup for 2022 festival, which takes place in the Italian-Swiss town of Locarno, Switzerland from August 3-13.

Locarno Film Festival (Festival international du film de Locarno) is a film festival dedicated to auteur cinema that takes place every August in the Italian-Swiss town of Locarno, Switzerland. It’s accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF). Locarno Film Festival is an Academy Award® qualifying festival, a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television) qualifying festival and a European Film Award qualifying festival.

Concorso Internazionale

The Concorso Internazionale features works shown primarily as world premieres, coming from all over the globe and competing for the prestigious Pardo d’oro. Showcasing established auteurs alongside the pleasure of discovery, storytelling and innovation, the Concorso Internazionale is an open, inclusive place, which aims to imagine the new territories of cinematic art. This is where the best forms of contemporary cinema converge, in keeping with the history and tradition of the Locarno Film Festival.

The Concorso Cineasti del presente offers a selection of first and second feature films, mostly world premieres, directed by emerging global talents. It’s the place devoted to the discovery of tomorrow’s cinema, which deserves to be supported beyond all genre distinctions. Besides the traditional Pardo d’oro and the best director award, the Concorso Cineasti del presente also offers prizes for the best actor and actress.

Pardi di domani

A territory for expressive experimentation and innovative formal poetry, the Pardi di domani section showcases short and medium length films as world or international premieres. The section consists of three competitions: Concorso internazionale, with works by emerging filmmakers from all over the world; Concorso nazionale, for Swiss productions; and Concorso Corti d’autore, with short works by established directors. This year’s selection is enriched by the eight short films made during the Spring Academy workshop, under the exceptional guidance of director Michelangelo Frammartino.

Piazza Grande

8,000 viewers a night, the Piazza Grande is both the Festival’s heart and its showcase. With its giant screen, one of the biggest in Europe, endowed with truly exceptional projection quality, the Piazza Grande is one of the finest open-air venues in the world. This magnificent and unique setting is where every night all the many and diverse festival audiences come together for a big cinematic event. The programming on the Piazza Grande offers prestigious screenings, most of them world, international or European premieres, introduced by the director and the cast. The Piazza Grande audience also serves as the biggest jury on the planet, voting for the renowned “Prix du Public UBS” (Audience Award). In addition, there is the Variety Piazza Grande Award, chosen by a panel of film critics, and intended to assist the international career of a film in the selection.

Open Doors: Screenings

In a 20-year-long collaboration with the SDC, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation within the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Open Doors has cast a spotlight on talents and films from countries where independent cinema is more fragile. From 2022 to 2024 Open Doors will focus on the film industries of 22 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean – which, throughout the year, carries out professional promotion and training programs and in August is present with the Co-Production Hub and the Producers’ Lab. Concomitantly, the non-competitive section Open Doors Screenings offers the audience a selection of feature-length films and shorts that are representative of the region, i.e., Central America and the Caribbean for the 2022 project cycle.

Retrospective: Douglas Sirk

Locarno’s retrospectives have contributed to the knowledge of world cinema with screenings that have gone down in history: from subject-specific programmes (Titanus, Lux, “Beloved and Rejected: Cinema in the young Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to 1963”), to tributes to contemporary filmmakers (Moretti, Kiarostami, Kaurismäki), to complete retrospectives of famous masters (Minnelli, Cukor, Tourneur, McCarey, Peckinpah). A much-loved rendezvous for film buffs and scholars worldwide, this year’s Retrospective focuses on the works of Douglas Sirk and is curated by Bernard Eisenschitz and Roberto Turigliatto.

Locarno Kids: Screenings

A selection for children and teenagers, a journey of initiation into the world of film through age-approriate movies (in partnership with Castellinaria – Festival del cinema giovane), but also great classic movies, rediscovered animation films, family-friendly movies premieres. And an honour, the Locarno Kids Award la Mobiliare, which will be presented to someone capable of bringing cinema to younger viewers.

Semaine de la critique

The Semaine de la critique is an independent section, created in 1990 by the Swiss Association of Film Journalists in partnership with the Locarno Film Festival. Every year, the Semaine de la critique showcases seven documentary features, all world or international premieres. The section promotes these innovative films whose themes and styles diverge from conventional trends. These are auteur films that strive to explore different realities, as well as push the boundaries of their audiovisual representation. They are bold, sometimes rough-edged works, always seeking to spark debate of our world and how it is perceived.

Panorama Suisse

Panorama Suisse showcases films that have enjoyed festival success, found an audience in cinemas or are currently unreleased. Film lovers from all over the world can thus discover contemporary Swiss productions at the Locarno Film Festival, through a specially curated section. A committee of representatives of the Solothurn Film Festival, the Swiss Film Academy and SWISS FILMS is in charge of the selection.
