The Galway Film Fleadh has announced the complete lineup for 2022 festival.

The Oscar-Qualifying Galway Film Fleadh, Ireland’s leading film festival, has announced the complete lineup for 2022 festival, which takes place in Galway from July 5-10.

Galway Film Fleadh is Ireland’s leading film event, a six-day international film festival taking place every July on the very edge of Europe.

Galway Film Fleadh was founded in 1989 as an opportunity for Irish filmmakers to exhibit their work to their peers. The central goal of the Galway Film Fleadh is to be a platform for the boldest new films, and to bring audiences and filmmakers from around the world together to share in the wonder of cinema.

The Oscar-Qualifying Awards of the Galway Film Fleadh are:

  • The Tiernan McBride Award for Best Fiction Short in association with Network Ireland Television
  • The James Horgan Award for Best Animation Short
  • Best Short Documentary Award in association with TG4

Peripheral Visions Competition

A lineup of 8 feature movies have been selected to go on screen in the Peripheral Visions Competition program section of the Galway Film Fleadh 2022. 2022 marks the first in-person edition of the Fleadh’s European cinema competition for 1st & 2nd features, which was founded in 2020 in cooperation with Europa Film Festivals. This year’s competition features films from Greece, France, Belgium, Finland, Albania, Germany, Spain and Ireland, competing for a €5000 prize.

The youth jury will decide on the winner of the 2022 Young Audience Award from these coming-of-age dramas in which teenagers deal with relationships, grief, and family trauma; and two documentaries led by young protagonists from conflict zones.

The Sinister Shorts are a mix of folk, supernatural and psychological horror, all covering the same theme of an unseen monster. With films more ghostly than gory, the  Galway Film Fleadh has carefully created a selection that has been previously screened at Cannes, SXSW and Tribeca.

Irish Talent: New Shorts 9, Documentary

A lineup of 9 documentary short films have been selected to go on screen in the Irish Talent: New Shorts 9, Documentary program section of the the Galway Film Fleadh 2022. This second selection of short documentaries covers a range of topics, each diving into a different perspective of our culture and history, both past and present. This program features student films and work from more established filmmakers.

Irish Talent: New Shorts 10, Animation

A lineup of 17 animated short films have been selected to go on screen in the Irish Talent: New Shorts 10, Animation program section of the the Galway Film Fleadh 2022. This selection of shorts celebrates the creative cornerstone of Irish film: the animation industry. The festival showcases the latest work from established directors and the best in new Irish animation from the country’s recent graduates. This program is not recommended for children.
