ANIMATOR 2022 announces its award winners

The International Animated Film Festival ANIMATOR has announced the complete list of award winners for 2022 festival, which started on July 8th.

International Animated Film Festival ANIMATOR is one of the three festivals in Poland (and the only animated film festival) to receive Oscar® qualifying status from the American Film Academy. This means that a short film that wins the Festival’s Grand Prix, the Golden Pegasus, is on a fast track to being considered for an Oscar® nomination in the Best Animated Short Film category and can compete for this prestigious award.

ANIMATOR 2022 Award Winners

International Short Film Competition

The members of the jury of the International Short Film Competition of the 15th International Animated Film Festival ANIMATOR 2022, consisting of Daniel Gill, Sebastian Ładyżyński, and Emma de Swaef, decided to award the following prizes:

Grand Prix – The Golden Pegasus / 45,000 PLN

“The Debutante” by Elizabeth Hobbs from United Kingdom won the Grand Prix – The Golden Pegasus award of the 2022 International Animated Film Festival ANIMATOR. The jury awarded “The Debutante” for “Witty and innovative adaptation of a novella, full of quirky energy, strong on an artistic level.”

Winner of the Grand Prix is qualified for consideration in the Best Animated Short Film category of the Annual Academy Awards® without the standard theatrical run, provided the film otherwise complies with the Academy rules.

2nd Award – The Silver Pegasus / 12,000 PLN

The Silver Pegasus of the 2022 ANIMATOR went to “Beast” by Hugo Covarrubias from Chile. The jury awarded “Beast” for “A masterfully disturbing realization from a dark period in Chile’s history.”

3rd Award – The Bronze Pegasus – Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology Award / 6,000 PLN

The Slovenian “Steakhouse” by Špela Čadež won the The Bronze Pegasus (Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology Award) of the 15th ANIMATOR for “Creatively brutal portrait of a destructive, toxic relationship.”

Award for the Best Music / 4,000 PLN

The Award for the Best Music went to Mio Adachi for “Bird in the Peninsula” from France, Japan. The jury awarded Mio Adachi “For excellent use of diegetic and non-diegetic music.”

Award for the Best Student Film / 1,000 PLN

The 2022 ANIMATOR’s Award for the Best Student Film went to the French “Au revoir Jérôme! (Goodbye Jérôme!)” by Gabrielle Selnet, Adam Sillard, Chloé Farr for “A successful reimagining of life after death.”

Special Award for Artistic Merit – in memoriam of Wojciech Juszczak (Artistic Director’s Award) / 1,000 PLN

The Special Award for Artistic Merit, also known as Artistic Director’s Award) went to the Polish animated short film “Great Wall of Poland (Wielki Mur Polski)” directed by Aga Jarząb for “Housing maximum content in minimum form.”

Audience Award for the Best Short Film

The Spanish animated short film “Loop” directed by Pablo Polledri won the Audience Award for the Best Short Film at the 2022 International Animated Film Festival ANIMATOR.

International Feature Film Competition

The members of the jury of the 15th International Animated Film Festival ANIMATOR 2022, consisting of Carolina Lopez Caballero, Hisko Hulsing, Marc James Roels, awarded the following prizes:

Award for the Best Feature Film / 30,000 PLN

The Best Feature Film Award of the 15th International Animated Film Festival ANIMATOR went to “Flee” directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen, produced by Final Cut For Real, distributed by Against Gravity from Denmark, France, Sweden. The jury awarded “Flee” for the following reason: “An engaging documentary thriller that uses animation to tell the difficult story of a refugee’s journey and his coming out of the closet in a sensitive way. Its humanity and cinematic richness make it a truly engaging and universal film.”

Audience Award for the Best Feature Film

Directed by Cesar Cabral, the Brazilian animated feature film “Bob Spit – We Do Not Like People” won the 2022 ANIMATOR’s Audience Award for the Best Feature Film.

Audience Award for the Best Animated Series

The Audience Award for the Best Animated Series went to “Poorly Drawn Lines – Episode 1: Bathroom Emergency” directed by Matt Thompson from USA.

Polish Animated Film Competition ANIMATOR.PL

The members of the jury of the ANIMATOR.PL Polish Animated Film Competition of the 15th International Animated Film Festival ANIMATOR 2022, consisting of Tim Allen, Matylda Damięcka, Tomasz Kolankiewicz, Joanna Jasinska-Koronkiewicz, Wioletta Sowa, decided to award the following prizes:

Grand Prix – The Golden Animusz – Polish Filmmakers Association’s Award / 12,000 PLN

“Impossible Figures and other stories I” (“Figury niemożliwe i inne historie I”) by Marta Pajek received the honor for the Grand Prix (The Golden Animusz), which is Polish Filmmakers Association’s Award. The jury awarded “Impossible Figures and other stories I” (“Figury niemożliwe i inne historie I”) “For the author’s style of animation, an expressive story, told through subtle means of expression and for a strongly immersive, cinematic experience.”

II Award – The Silver Animusz – Polish Filmmakers Association’s Award / 4,000 PLN

The Silver Animusz award of the Polish Filmmakers Association went to “Slow Light” directed by Kijek/Adamski (Katarzyna Kijek and Przemysław Adamski) “For finding harmony between an interesting story and excellent visuals.”

III Award – The Bronze Animusz / 2,000 PLN

The Bronze Animusz award of the Polish Filmmakers Association went to “This Will Not Be A Festival Film” (“To nie będzie film festiwalowy”) directed byJulia Orlik “For an honest reflection on the sacrifices we make as filmmakers.”

“Once there was a sea” (“Bolo raz jedno more…”) directed by Joanna Kozuch from Poland, Slovakia won an Honorable Mention “For proving that animation is often the only way to tell an extremely important story, and showing that human actions can have a catastrophic effect on the future.”

Audience Award for the Best Polish Film

“The Bridge” directed by Izumi Yoshida from Poland won the 2022 ANIMATOR’s Audience Award for the Best Polish Film.

Volunteers Award for The Best Film of the 15th International Animated Film Festival ANIMATOR

The Volunteers Award for The Best Film of the 15th International Animated Film Festival ANIMATOR went to “The 2 Shoes” (“Les 2 souliers”) directed by Paul Driessen from France.
