Guanajuato International Film Festival

Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF) is an Academy Award® qualifying festival for the short film categories.

About

Guanajuato International Film Festival or GIFF is an annual international film festival, held since 1998. It is held during the final week of July in San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato City, Mexico. GIFF was formerly known as Expresión en Corto International Film Festival.

Founded in 1998 by Sarah Hoch and Ernesto Herrera, the GIFF has established itself throughout this quarter of a century as a vital training center that contributes to the success of new filmmakers, actors, producers, screenwriters and technicians in our country. Since then, the vision of the Guanajuato International Film Festival has been based on the importance of renewing itself and applying innovative strategies. The GIFF aims to serve new audiences, adopt new technologies and take into account all areas involved in the cinematographic universe.

The Guanajuato International Film Festival has placed itself as the most important platform for young filmmakers in Latin America. Beginning in 1998 in San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato City, GIFF offers an extensive selection of screenings, workshops, conferences and concerts that are free of charge for the audience. It’s also an essential destination for international film industry professionals for a wide variety of networking opportunities.

As a non-profit organization that is a state-sponsored, and as a cultural event that does not charge admission to its viewing audience, GIFF estimates an attendance of more than 90,000 total audience members and generally receives more than 3,000 submissions from 109 participating countries in its international competition. GIFF includes an official selection in competition and special shows with the most select Mexican and international cinema, conferences, workshops, industry spaces, concerts, tributes, premieres and many more activities to enjoy art and culture together in the privileged spaces that Guanajuato cities offer.

Guanajuato International Film Festival is an Academy Award® qualifying festival for the short films categories. Winners of Best Short Animation and Best Short Fiction International will be eligible for consideration in the Animated Short Film/ Live Action Short Film category of the Academy Awards® without the standard theatrical run, provided the film otherwise complies with the Academy Rules.
