Perspektive Deutsches Kino: Visibility, Networking, Support – For Filmmakers in Germany

BERLIN (December 6, 2022) – The Berlinale stands for the long-term promotion of talent. The section Perspektive Deutsches Kino is underlining its commitment to up-and-coming creatives in Germany with a special focus on supporting and granting visibility to all film skills. Because film is a collective work: script, camera, costume design or make-up, editing, music composition, directing, producing, acting, stage design and sound design all join forces to give of their best. In the supplementary film series Perspektive Match, in future the special talent from a film discipline will also be honoured in Perspektive-films. The selected talents will be brought into exchange with established colleagues from the Deutsche Filmakademie through a mentorship. In cooperation with Berlinale Talents, a film in which the mentor was involved will be shown publicly at the HAU Hebbel am Ufer (HAU1) theatre on four afternoons. This will be followed by a panel discussion between the mentor and the Perspektive talent. The aim is to share experiences, open up new perspectives, and celebrate the art of filmmaking together with the audience. “I am delighted that the new series, already conceived by Linda Söffker but postponed due to Covid-19, can now take place in its entirety! It gives filmmakers from a wide range of disciplines the chance to exchange experiences and offers the audience an exciting insider’s view of filmmaking,” says the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section head, Jenni Zylka. Perspektive Match is a cooperation between Perspektive Deutsches Kino, the Deutsche Filmakademie and Berlinale Talents.

Kompagnon Fellowship and Heiner Carow Prize

In addition, the Kompagnon Fellowship programme, which has already supported talents such as Nora Fingscheidt and Julian Radlmaier, will be continued in 2023. Enjoying the support of the German Federal Film Board (FFA) for the first time, Berlinale Talents and Perspektive Deutsches Kino will once again mentor directors and screenwriters living in Germany for the duration of a full year. The programme includes 5,000 Euros in direct support as well as 3,000 Euros for consultation services per fellow, e.g., in the fields of film law, team management or general professional development. In this way, expertise is developed on a sustainable basis and networking with the industry is strengthened. The Kompagnon Fellowship holders are selected by a jury appointed by Berlinale Talents and Perspektive Deutsches Kino and will be announced during the festival. The Heiner Carow Prize for the promotion of German cinema art, endowed with 5,000 Euros, will be awarded at Berlin International Film Festival for the tenth time. This prize also focuses on the different film disciplines: honoured will be a talent from Perspektive Deutsches Kino who has made a particular mark on a documentary or feature film in the section. The prize is sponsored by the DEFA Foundation and awarded by an annually changing, three-member jury. — Deed News website: http://www.deed.news/ Deed News publication on Google News: http://news.google.com/publications/CAAqBwgKMPPbsQswgPfIAw/ Deed News on Twitter: http://twitter.com/DeedNews Deed News on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/DeedNewsAgency Deed News company page on LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/company/deed-news Deed News on Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/deed.news/ Deed News channel on Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/channels/filmfestivalnews/ Deed News channel on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/@deednews

The architecture of Harpa, where the award ceremony will take place, is inspired by Icelandic nature and the structure is based on columnar basalt. Therefore, the artists decided that the art carpet should bring the unique Icelandic nature within the walls of Harpa. The inspiration for the Art Carpet is drawn from the uniqueness of the Icelandic landscape, for example lava fields covered with wooly fringe moss. This special moss makes the landscape look unearthly. The artists put emphasis on capturing the otherworldly elements from nature with variety methods, for example tufting Icelandic wool, using geotextiles and saw dust. The installation is designed to have a second life and will be used for other events as well. The European Film Awards are presented in 26 categories. 16 winners have already been announced, the winners of the main categories will be revealed during the award show: European Film, European Comedy, European Discovery – Prix FIPRESCI, European Documentary, European Animated Feature Film, European Short Film, European Director, European Actress, European Actor and European Screenwriter. Against the backdrop of autocratic Russia and alienating social conditions, the documentary recounts their joys and struggles with bracing honesty and emotional intensity, through the careful editing of home videos and street footage. The Outstanding Contribution to Southeast Asian Cinema Award went to In-Docs, a pioneering organisation that continues to platform the regional exchange of ideas and mutual support amongst a stalwart of Southeast Asia’s filmmaking communities – documentary filmmakers. Celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, SGIFF wanted to recognise In-Docs’ considerable dedication to championing the region’s tireless spirit of documentary filmmaking.

Pantelis Voulgaris retrospective

The Film Library of Greece, the Film Library of Thessaloniki and the Thessaloniki Film Festival, with the support of the Hellenic Film Center, are honoring Pantelis Voulgaris with a retrospective of his fiction films, which will be presented in Athens from December 8 to 15, in the large hall of Film Library of Greece. A unique opportunity to see 12 of his beloved feature films on the big screen: from ANNA’S ENGAGEMENT to his most recent creation, THE LAST NOTE, with the presence of actors from each film. Four short films by the great Greek creator will also be screened. The Pantelis Voulgaris retrospective, presented with great success a few days ago in Thessaloniki, explores the complex and fascinating aspects of the work of one of the leading directors of Greek cinema. As Maria Komninou, president of the Film Library of Greece, points out, “Voulgaris was one of the main exponents of the new current of Greek Cinema (NEK), and he decisively contributed to the renewal of his writing and perspective. Already from his first film, Anna’s Consul (1972), he shapes his personal writing and wins 3 prizes at the Berlin Film Festival, while he is in exile from the junta.” “Voulgaris, forms a long path with beloved and important films – narratives that focus on the transition of society from the politics of exclusions and discrimination (Happy day, Stone Years) to the politics of identities (Everything is a road, Brides). Let’s remember that in Brides, Norman, the photographer, is perhaps even closer to the director himself, who insists on photographing-filming the small things that others pass by. This is the look of Voulgaris: he insists on portraying the humble, the insignificant people that others pass by…” The opening of the tribute will take place on Thursday, December 8, with the film ANNA’S ENGAGEMENT (To proxenio tis Annas) in the presence of Pantelis Voulgaris and the film’s protagonist Anna Vagena. The iconic Greek director will be present at the screenings of the tribute to welcome his favorite collaborators in front of and behind the camera who will preface the films. And of course, the writer Ioanna Karystianis, his partner in life as well as in art, could not be missing, since she has signed the script of many of his films. *Three films in the program will be screened with special subtitles for K/deaf and hard of hearing and visually impaired people, and with audio description for blind and visually impaired people (Universally accessible SDH / AD screening). Olympia International Film Festival For Children and Young People celebrates 25th anniversary

The 25th Olympia International Film Festival For Children and Young People and the 22nd Camera Zizanio have returned to theaters without restrictions to celebrate 25 years of the biggest youth film festival. The opening of the Festival took place yesterday at the packed “Apollo” in Pyrgos, the heart of the event, with two former “Zizania” presenters: Maria Asmi and Irini Zeza – a choice representative of the Festival’s philosophy of actively involving children – who they start as spectators and along the way become a “part” of it. The ceremony began with a small tribute to the great creator Robiros Manthoulis (1929-2022), a dear friend of the Festival, who recently passed away. Having participated many times in the Olympia Festival, passing on to children the precious essence of his cinematic knowledge, Robiros Mantholis was unforgettable for young and old alike. In the short video shown, Nikos Theodosiou recorded some of these moments, with Manthoulis himself confessing how he was introduced to the cinema: “I was young, and while watching a movie from a hole in Serres, I tripped and fell on a electrified wire that the cinematographer had put up, to deter viewers like me. “I was shaken, but maybe from this electric shock I became a director!” Elsewhere he characteristically says, “What an entire state does not do, within thousands of hours of public education lessons, that is to introduce children to audiovisual art, the Olympia Festival does with enormous success.” Taking the floor, the Mayor of Pyrgos, Takis Antonakopoulos, welcomed the visitors “to the cradle of Olympic values, where, just as Apollo prevailed in his battle with Mercury, so art fights its own battle to win the souls of children. As a Municipality, we are proud that Pyrgos is the start of the Festival, which is now an institution, and we are happy that with the help of the Region, its future permanent facilities have been secured, a project announced by the previous government and continued by the current government. Because Culture unites and we resist the black cloud of war as best we can.” Afterwards, the prizes of the 3rd Panhellenic Student Competition “Gender in the foreground” on the topic of gender discrimination, held in collaboration with the General Secretariat of Demographic and Family Policy and Gender Equality, were awarded. It is worth mentioning that the prize-winning children of the 4th Gymnasium of Alexandroupoli “Theodoros Kastanos” were inspired by the script for their film “You Can” “from the murder of Xevrie who succumbed to her injuries a year ago”. And from all the unfortunate women – victims of gender-based violence, exploitation and sexual abuse. “No one is alone, no one is alone” concluded the message sent by the children from Alexandroupolis, causing warm applause. Their own prize for the film “The Cycle of Violence” was received by the children of EPAL Almyros Magnesia themselves, who, as their teacher said, are already working on a program on gender violence. Then the judging panels and the four competition programs of the Olympia Festival were presented: Long Fiction Films, Short Fiction Films, Short Animation Films, “KIDS & DOCS” (documentaries for children). The popular Camera Zizanio, which this year presents 210 films from 31 countries, awarding prizes by age category. This year’s program of the Festival includes dozens of film workshops in various cities of Ilia and of course in Pyrgos (for the first time also in Xystri Park). And this year there were people, who crossed half the planet to come to the festival, one of the most important of its kind internationally. Only in the multinational filmmaking workshop Mythos Project, 100 children from 17 countries participate. As part of this year’s event, an important version of the Festival will be presented: the emblematic “Cinema case” by Alain Bergala, president of this year’s jury. The presentation of the book will take place on Friday, together with a masterclass of the important French critic, former editor-in-chief of the legendary Cahiers du Cinema, and professor of Cinema Pedagogy. The program of the coming week also includes masterclasses by the veteran cinematographer Nikos Kavoukidis in collaboration with the Skasiarcheo, as well as the 5th Olympia Creative Ideas Pitching Lab for film professionals, who plan a short film for children and young people. The deputy regional governor for culture and tourism, Nikolaos Korovesis, addressing the organizers of the festival, said: “You have been educating our children for 25 years now and you are raising issues that are more relevant than ever with what is happening next to our homes… At the same time, you are strengthening the extroversion and economic development of area. So the Region must support you. We have already renewed our programming contract for the next three years. The Region of Western Greece will support this important institution.” Taking the floor, the artistic director and “soul” of the Olympia International Film Festival for Children and Youth, Dimitris Spyrou, gave a small retrospective of the institution: “We started at the end of the last century: in 1997. We decided to make Pyrgos and Amaliada a point of reference for cinema for children and young people and for film education in Greece. Unknown words then. But because we were well aware that audiovisuals have a great influence on children and young people, it was necessary to take this initiative. In these 25 years we have implemented a number of innovative programs, important publications, screenings in all prefectures of the country, collaborations with public bodies, universities, schools, programs for social groups with limited access to art, the disabled, young prisoners, refugees, second chance schools . For us, it was and is very important that the Public School has access to audio-visual art.” “In these 25 years, a lot has changed in society and in education, the needs of the children themselves have also changed, so the Festival itself is also changing. But something never changes: the protagonists of the Olympia Festival are the children themselves. We are simply fellow travelers and animators of this effort. And we know very well that if children do not come into contact with art during their school years, it is most likely that they never will. And this is very negative for their mental development…” In closing, he emphasized that “yes, 25 years is a quarter of a century. And there is a great need to create infrastructure. Our new space at the raisin factory of ASO, in Pyrgos, can take off the Festival, stimulate the cultural life of the city, and contribute to the economic development of the region. I thank the teachers of Ilia Prefecture from the bottom of my heart. The Festival cannot function without them. Also, the local government and of course the citizens who proved that all these years they deserve this festival and much more than this Festival”. In closing, Vassilis Yiannopoulos, deputy governor of Ilia and chairman of the Organizing Committee, officially announced the start of the Festival. “For another year, the Festival of our hearts is here, 25 years now, far from restrictions and discrimination. Looking back to 1997, I want to commemorate three people: the initiator of the festival Dimitris Spyrou, the tireless and always young Nikos Theodosiou and of course the cornerstone, the president of the Steering Committee Christos Konstantopoulos. Who would have imagined that this Festival would develop into one of the most important internationally?” And he underlined “This year’s Festival, beyond its 25th anniversary, I believe has a special significance: we should highlight and remind its important founding values and its child-centered view in a society where the phenomena of child abuse are increasing. We don’t sweep such issues under the carpet! On the contrary, we need such actions to fight the social rot that is around us”. The opening ceremony ended with the Orchestra and Choir of the School of Byzantine Music of the Ilia Metropolis performing three wonderful songs by Mikis Theodorakis. This Sunday, at 7 pm, the Kids & Docs Opening Event will take place at the Cine Cinema in Amaliada. European Film Academy unveils nominees of the European Film Awards 2022
European Film Academy has unveiled the nominees of the main categories of the 35th European Film Awards. / IMAGE: TRIANGLE OF SADNESS dir. Ruben Östlund (Sweden/France/UK/Turkey/Germany), 2022 HIFF alum Ruben Östlund (FORCE MAJEURE, THE SQUARE) strikes again with this shocking comedic satire of modern extravagance in the era of Insta-fame. A young model Carl (Harris Dickinson) and his girlfriend Yaya (Charlbi Dean) are invited to join the wealthy elite aboard a luxury cruise helmed by a slightly crazed captain (Woody Harrelson). What promises to be a lavish voyage soon derails into a disaster of epic proportion. Artfully told, this wild romp won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and delivers a riotous (and at times hard to stomach) commentary on the superficial glitz and glamor of high society. A Neon release.

“The Pink Lagoon,”directed by Juan Arce and Francisco Gallo, Winner of Best of Fest Audience Choice Award for Best Film / Two distant siblings, two different worlds. A journey of familial reconnection, positivity, and valuing the different ways of seeing the world. Mariana is a fiercely independent, twentysomething young woman with Down’s syndrome who loves ballet, art, and living her best life. When invited to participate in a publicly funded dance exhibition in another city, she visits uptight, estranged brother Arturo with her free-spirited ballet teacher in tow to ask for some assistance getting there. Initially put out and resistant to doing anything much to help that would distract him from his own life and high-strung fiancee, he can’t help but to be swept up by his sister’s profound dignity, sincerity for the world in general, and true passion for dance. The cadence and sweet rhythms of the storytelling and the magnificent performance of lead actress Monica Arce as Mariana will make viewers of this film moved and quite happy to have had the experience. / Courtesy of Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival

A NEW HOME, St. Louis’ Bosnian Community documentary, streams on Amazon Prime Video

A NEW HOME by Joseph Puleo follows up its festival run on Amazon Prime Video as it continues to introduce viewers across the country to St. Louis’ Bosnian community. The latest collaboration from Director/Producer Joseph Puleo and Executive Producer Rio Vitale, debuted this past summer where the filmmaking team once again achieved unprecedented success. Their showing was the most attended film as part of the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase and took home both Best Documentary & Best Sound (Documentary). A coveted feature screening slot at the 31st St. Louis International Film Festival also provided local theater-goers an encore viewing opportunity this past November. “I greatly admire the way Joseph Puleo shows our city and our civic heritage in cinematic love letters to St. Louis, highlighting ethnicities that have made a vital and lasting impact on the place we all call home,” explains Cinema St. Louis Artistic Director Chris Clark. “His films are perfectly crafted, well-oiled machines that always draw a crowd due in no small part to his endless drive and passion to promote both his own work and the events themselves.” In a follow up to America’s Last Little Italy: The Hill, the duos new film examines the story of Bosnian War refugees fleeing to St. Louis, Missouri, 30 years ago. As the war in Ukraine continues to rage and thousands of its citizens are displaced and seeking new homes, the plight of the Bosnians remains as relevant as ever. When Bosnians fled their homes to escape the war in 1992, many ended up in St. Louis, largely because of its affordable housing and available jobs. The new arrivals began assimilating, starting their own businesses and transforming a once dilapidated South City neighborhood in the shadow of the Bevo Mill into a thriving “Little Bosnia.” Over the ensuing three decades, an estimated 70,000 Bosnians have migrated to St. Louis, making it the most inhabited area for Bosnians outside of Bosnia itself.  A New Home tells the story of these refugees’ perseverance and determination to not only start life over but prosper. Pre-production on A New Home began in the spring of 2021 with hours of VHS footage and more than a thousand photographs generously donated to the project to utilize during the editing process. The film also includes interviews with luminaries including Patrick McCarthy, author of After the Fall: Srebrenica Survivors in St. Louis; Ben Moore, Senior Researcher at the Center for Bosnian Studies; Anna Crosslin, past president of the International Institute of St. Louis; former Missouri congressman Russ Carnahan; and Doug Moore, a former journalist at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, as well as 5 Bosnian War survivors and refugees. “A New Home is a fascinating documentary that I highly recommend,” states former Mayor of St. Louis, Francis Slay, who is also featured in the film. “I hope everyone in the St. Louis area gets a chance to watch and not only be entertained but learn about their Bosnian neighbors’ struggle for safety and freedom and the lasting impact they have had on our entire region.” “This documentary was a complete labor of love,” said Puleo. “To be trusted with telling the harrowing and triumphant story of the Bosnians in St. Louis was not a responsibility that I took lightly and their courageous resolve inspired me to give this film all I could give. The audience response so far has been overwhelmingly positive and we cannot wait for more people to get the opportunity to see A New Home through Amazon’s portal.” About the creators:

The Theme of Berlinale Talents 2023: “You Must Be Joking – Humour in Serious Times”

BERLIN (November 30, 2022) – In its 21st edition, the Berlin International Film Festival‘s talent development initiative is dedicated to humour in serious times and appeals to the strengthening and restorative powers of this universal human trait. Film is and always has been entertainment, even under challenging circumstances. So what about humour in cinema today, and what are we allowed to laugh about, despite serious issues? Or maybe precisely because of serious issues? Christine Tröstrum and Florian Weghorn, the heads of Berlinale Talents, have a clear stance on this: “War and crisis demand our full commitment, and we stand in solidarity with the people who are risking their lives for freedom in Ukraine, Iran and elsewhere, including many alumni of Berlinale Talents. The Berlinale stands for active engagement, and with humour we emotionally strengthen this community and are able to connect with each other on the serious issues.” Because this is the very nature of jokes. In what are probably the shortest stories people have told each other since time began, there is great skill in ingeniously condensing truth and delivering the punchline message with flair to another person, sometimes below the belt. Comedies, rom-coms and satires are furthermore a million-dollar business worldwide. How do emerging and experienced filmmakers explore this broad genre in new ways, incorporating cultural contexts and political challenges? Berlinale Talents would like to shed light on all this and more in a programme of talks and workshops for the public and the invited Talents. The first guest in Berlinale Talents‘ popular public programme will be Ruben Östlund, whose stinging social satire Triangle of Sadness is currently both provoking and thrilling audiences in cinemas across the world. Cheerful at first glance and complex in detail, illustrator Leandro Alzate and graphic designer Miriam Jacobi have interpreted the different dimensions of humour and bring warm colours into the cold February with their key visual for the 2023 annual theme “You Must Be Joking – Humour in Serious Times”. Berlinale Talents is going to take place from February 18 to 23, 2023 at the theatre HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Berlin. It is one of the most important platforms for emerging film professionals and offers 200 selected creatives from the fields of film and series networking opportunities and access to a global community of soon to be 10,000 Talents. The collaborative interaction of all film disciplines as well as the involvement of the cinema-loving festival audience have been the most important features of Berlinale Talents in Berlin from the very beginning. The initiative considers each of its 14 film disciplines and their representatives as equal in the artistic process, allowing this vision of a diverse and fair cultural industry to be a practical experience for all.

Ursula von der Leyen to accept the first European Sustainability Award – Prix Film4Climate during European Film Awards

BERLIN (November 30, 2022) – During the 35th European Film Awards on 10 December in Reykjavík Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, will accept the newly introduced European Sustainability Award – Prix Film4Climate 2022 on behalf of the European Commission. The award is given to the ambitious and revolutionary programme “European Green Deal”, that was launched by the Commission under von der Leyen’s Presidency. The European Sustainability Award – Prix Film4Climate aims to award a European institution, company, or film for an “Outstanding European contribution to sustainability in film”. The initiative is a partnership between the European Film Academy and the World Bank Group’s programme for creative communications and climate action, Connect4Climate. The World Bank Group is the largest multilateral financier of climate action in developing countries. Through Connect4Climate, with its network of over 500 partners worldwide, the programme implements creative campaigns, amplifies impactful stories, elevates the voices of young people and mobilizes audiences through specific initiatives, including Film4Climate.Believing that powerful storytelling on both big and small screens can spark meaningful social change, Film4Climate works with filmmakers, producers and organizations to champion climate and environmental action in the film industry through both content and production. The objective of the European Sustainability Award – Prix Film4Climate is to celebrate more than just films that are produced according to the most state-of the art sustainable standards, but to encourage the film industry to drive its influential impact towards a sustainable approach to economy, society and environment, promoting real impact in individuals’ lives. The winner will receive a native tree from the country hosting the European Film Awards ceremony, that will be planted locally after the Award ceremony.

The European Sustainability Award – Prix Film4Climate is being presented by three European teenagers

The European Sustainability Award – Prix Film4Climate will be presented to the President of the European Commission by 3 young Europeans, Raluca from Romania, Ahmad from Sweden and Vilhjálmur from Iceland. They represent the younger generation that will be the most impacted by policies, decisions and actions taken today. Two of the presenters, Raluca and Ahmad, are part of the Youth Council that are co-creating the European Film Club, a programme to encourage teenagers to watch more European films. They have been planning sustainability measures within the European Film Club, such as the screening of films focusing on environmental issues such as climate change and the biodiversity crisis. The European Film Club will be launched in 2023 and aims to be a carbon-neutral programme. The first European Film Award bestowed every year on a European film is the Young Audience Award, which is part of the European Film Club. This year’s award was given on 13 November by thousands of young jury members from all over Europe to the film ANIMAL by Cyril Dion. The film addresses the worries of young people about the 6th mass extinction of animal life that is currently taking place in nature, due to the behaviour of humankind.

European Film Academy strongly commits to sustainability

The Award ceremonies of the European Film Academy are strongly committed to promoting sustainability. Together with the hosting country Iceland, the Academy strives to reduce the carbon emission impact of all its events in 2022. With the organisation of the award ceremony in Reykjavík, also Iceland will showcase its leading role in sustainability. The event will happen within a sustainable event infrastructure that considers the best practices in terms of resource use, waste management, transportation, and catering for major events. The European Film Academy is also raising awareness among Academy members and guests traveling to Iceland. The Academy is offering options to attendees who will be flying to offset their carbon emissions by donating an amount based on the estimated carbon offset for a return economy flight to Iceland with an average distance of 3,000 kilometers within Europe, which will support the planting of trees in the European Film Forest located in Iceland. This is coordinated by the Icelandic Forestry Association. The introduction of the Month of European Film is another sustainability measure in the portfolio of the European Film Academy. By enabling European audiences to enjoy films in local cinemas or online in the month prior to the Awards ceremony, the impact of the celebration of European cinema is not limited to a one-location event anymore. The Month of European Film will expand and bring films from Europe closer to all Europeans, disregarding the place where they live and when or how they prefer to see films. Local initiatives with cinemas that are promoting sustainable solutions for the experience of watching films, will be prioritised as partners by the European Film Academy.

Hosting country Iceland leading in cultural, social and environmental sustainability

Iceland itself is a recognised and respected leader in cultural, social and environmental sustainability. The country has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 55% compared to 1990 levels by 2030, becoming climate neutral by 2040, and fossil fuel free by 2050. Its ambitious goals are reinforced by its current energy production, which enables the supply of 100% of renewable energy for electricity and heating needs, mixing hydropower and geothermal energy. In October 2020, the Icelandic Film Centre (IFC) published  the “Icelandic Film Policy from 2020 to 2030”, disclosing important strategic actions set to boost the country’s audiovisual sector. Regarding sustainability and green shooting, the policy document mentions Iceland’s effort to build a brand to attract international film production by systematically developing a year-round film industry based on sustainability values, social responsibility, and equality, to meet the expectations of foreign production. The action started in January 2021, and the responsible parties are the IFC, the film industry, and the Foreign Service. The ceremony of the European Film Awards – the most renowned and prestigious award for European film – is presented by the European Film Academy and European Film Academy Productions.
